Johan Deckmann
Opening of the solo exhibition on 16 September 2021
16 Sep - 17 Oct 2021
Johan Deckmann is an artist, writer and psychotherapist. His art, consisting of short sentences painted on fictional books. Deckmann explores the complications of life through the power of language. The titles, though cleverly cloaked in humour, ask the viewer to ponder some of life's biggest questions, concerns and absurdities. By linking his practices together, it is clear that the artist employs the fundamental importance of psychology in his artistic work. The book titles come from contemporary society and reflection on everyday life. Perhaps this is why the audience, regardless of gender, age or cultural background, can all identify with these works.
Growing up in an antique shop in Copenhagen, Denmark, surrounded by a variety of antiques and objects, the artist developed a passion for old books at an early age.
Humour and honesty are two important pillars in Deckmann's work, which aims to stimulate and motivate his audience. Deckmann believes in the simple power and beauty of words, whereby a text is just as powerful as figurative, sculptural, abstract or any other kind of art. Thus, he works in the tension between minimal and conceptual, ultimately leaving the viewer to read between the lines.
